SUV Buying Guide

Buying a used SUV is about more than finding the right price. You also want to consider drivetrain, seating, mileage, maintenance history and how the vehicle fits the way you actually drive.

AWD VS. 4WD: WHAT DO YOU NEED FOR INDIANA WINTERS?

AWD can be useful when roads are wet, snowy or slippery because the system can send power to wheels that have traction. 4WD is designed more around increased traction and capability, particularly for deeper snow, rough roads and situations where you need additional low-speed capability.

For typical Indiana winter driving, you don't necessarily need 4WD. A good AWD SUV can be a practical choice for commuting and family driving. More important, don't confuse AWD or 4WD with the ability to stop on ice. INDOT specifically notes that 4WD may help you get moving but does not make you stop faster. Tire condition matters, too; NHTSA notes that winter tires are more effective than all-season tires in deep snow.

TAHOE VS. TRAVERSE VS. TELLURIDE VS. ACADIA

Chevrolet Tahoe: A large, traditional SUV with substantial passenger and cargo space and available 4WD — worth considering if towing, room and full-size capability are priorities.

Chevrolet Traverse: A more crossover-oriented 3-row choice that offers family-friendly space without the size and truck-based feel of a Tahoe.

Kia Telluride: A modern 3-row SUV with a comfortable interior, useful passenger space and available AWD; J&M currently has a Telluride SX AWD listed.

GMC Acadia: A midsize SUV that sits between smaller crossovers and full-size SUVs, making it worth a look if you want three rows without stepping all the way up to a Tahoe.

WHAT SHOULD YOU CHECK ON A 100K-MILE SUV?

Don't automatically rule out an SUV because the odometer starts with a 1. At 100,000 miles and beyond, condition and maintenance history become especially important.

Look for service records, check the CARFAX history, inspect the tires and brakes, and pay attention to warning lights, leaks, suspension components and transmission behavior during the test drive.

Ask about major maintenance that may be due based on the vehicle's age and mileage. A well-maintained 120,000-mile SUV can make more sense than a neglected SUV with substantially fewer miles. J&M openly carries higher-mileage vehicles, so ask questions and inspect the specific SUV rather than judging it by mileage alone.

Whether you're shopping for a family SUV in Lebanon or looking for an AWD vehicle for Central Indiana roads, we'll help you compare the options and take a test drive.
